While its roots trace back to 1980, when Clive Paton planted the first vines on Martinborough’s free-draining alluvial gravels, it is the vision and skill of longtime winemaker Helen Masters that continue to define Ata Rangi today.

Helen joined the estate in 2003 and has played a pivotal role in shaping its signature style—wines that balance purity of fruit with finesse and a true sense of place. Recognised as New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2019 by Gourmet Traveller WINE, Helen has been lauded by critics for her ability to craft exceptional wines in every vintage. Rebecca Gibb MW (Vinous) notes that she “nails it every year whither the season,” capturing both the depth and elegance of Martinborough’s distinctive growing conditions.

At the heart of Ata Rangi’s Pinot Noir is the famed Abel clone, which Clive was among the first to champion, securing cuttings in the 1980s. Also known as the ‘gum boot clone,’ the vines are believed to have originated from the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy before being smuggled into New Zealand and later confiscated by customs officer Malcolm Abel. These remarkable vines, now the estate’s oldest, form the foundation of a wine widely considered the benchmark for Martinborough Pinot Noir. In recognition of its enduring quality, Ata Rangi Pinot Noir was awarded the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa (‘Grand Cru of New Zealand’) in 2010.

Committed to organic and regenerative farming, Helen is deeply engaged with the challenges of climate change. She focuses on soil health and vine resilience rather than adhering to European biodynamic principles.
