Barolo Falletto 2019, Bruno Giacosa, 6x750ml

Vendor:Cellar Select

Barolo Falletto 2019, Bruno Giacosa, 6x750ml

£950.00

The late, great, Bruno Giacosa believed that great wine is made in the vineyard, by the expertise of the growers, and 2019 is a stunning example of this. The estate is now run by Bruno’s daughter Bruna, who continues from her father overseeing some of Piedmont’s finest vineyards, from Barbaresco’s Asili and Rabaja crus, to what is arguably Serralunga d’Alba’s very best, Falletto – terroir is very much on her side.

2019 was a late harvest, with a good amount of rain in the early Summer which promoted moisture retention in the soil. The wines are tense and well balanced with excellent structure for ageing.

Walter Speller, Italian critic for Jancisrobinson.com, did not yet taste Giacosa's 2019s, but recently wrote of the 2019 Barolo vintage, calling it - ‘a vintage that excels in elegance’, ‘a classic in the making’. He likened it to 2013, ‘an outstanding vintage from a rather troubled growing season’. He said that both have produced wines ‘to lay down’, observing that ‘tannins are certainly eye-catching in 2019 because they are plentiful’.

2018 was also a late vintage with a cool summer followed by a warm September and October which allowed for a slow maturation, and the harvest was around 2 weeks later than usual. Due to the estate’s extremely high standards, there was vigorous selection in the vineyards, meaning there simply wasnt enough juice to make any single vineyard wines from Barbaresco or Barolo in 2018, so the 2018 Barbaresco below is a blend of the single vineyards and is looking magnificent.

2017 was a very warm and dry year, saved by rain in September. Cool nights and warm days allowed for an even ripening and whilst it was not an easy vintage, the Rocche Riserva is truly stunning and potentially the wine of the vintage.

2014 was a difficult vintage across the board, but the Giacosa estate is known for making bold statements - both the 2006 and 2010 vintages (for many, 2010 was the best ever!) were deemed not high enough in quality to make any single vineyard wines, and, the elsewhere 2013 and 2015, not good enough for Rocche Riserva, but 2014 was picked as a perfect candidate, and Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate said in 2019 "Betting on 2014 has turned out to be a brilliantly contemplated move" and suggested the wine will drink well from 2023.
