Barolo San Rocco 2016, Azelia, 6x1500ml
Luigi Scavino is first cousin and neighbour of Enrico Scavino (of legendary producer Paolo Scavino), in the commune of Castiglione Falletto. Here Barolo’s two main soils are stratified together, resulting in wines of both power and elegance. Luigi’s Piemonte estate Azelia, which is now run by his son Lorenzo, is perennially an estate to watch, and as they rarely receive the write-ups they deserve, prices remain very agreeable – these are available at half the price of some of their neighbours!
From around 16 hectares of vineyard, Azelia produces 6,000 cases per annum, from Langhe Nebbiolo up to a range of impressive single vineyard Crus. With very old vines (some over 60 years old – Luigi does not believe in replacing vines until they actually die!) the wines have incredible depth and complexity that could only be the product of healthy old vines. Their winemaking techniques have been refined and improved over the years and today only around 20% of new oak is used with both barriques and large botti casks used for ageing, ensuring purity of fruit.
San Rocco is Azelia’s own vineyard, a Monopole, and one of Serralunga’s finest. The vines here average 65+ years of age.
