Cotes de Nuits Villages 2019, Jane Eyre, 12x750ml
Australian-born, Jane’s career has seen her move from hairdresser to artisanal winemaker. In 1998, she was working as a hairdresser when she asked a customer, who happened to be the wife of wine writer Jeremy Oliver, if she knew of any wineries where she could do work experience. The Olivers recommended Burgundy, which has since been an inextricable part of Jane's life. “I fell in love with France, and Burgundy is just what I wanted to make.” After working vintages at Cullen in Margaret River, and Felton Road and Ata Rangi in New Zealand, she came to Burgundy in 2004 for a job with Domaine des Comtes Lafon. She then took over as assistant winemaker at Domaine Newman, and has slowly developed her own négociant business, renting a small space in a winery in Bligny-lès-Beaune with Dominique Lafon. She is achieving impressive results with Pinot Noir using a minimal intervention approach to winemaking and allowing her wines to express a true sense of place.
In the 2021 edition of Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France, Jane Eyre was awarded two stars, one of only 26 producers in the whole of France to be recognised at this level. Otherwise known as the ‘Guide Vert’ or Green Guide to the best French wines, Jane is also the only Australian producer to receive two stars for their wines, a phenomenal achievement for a relative newcomer to Burgundy.
The fruit for this Cotes de Nuits Villages wine comes from two parcels located near the village of Comblachien. Fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless-steel tanks, Jane used a combination of gentle pump overs and punch downs where needed and aged the wine in French oak, of which 25% was new. Her Côtes de Nuits Villages has fragrant aromas of ripe black and red cherries, coupled with delicate notes of pepper and rose petal. On the palate, juicy red fruits dominate with an elegant floral and subtle spicy character. As with all of Jane’s wines, the Côtes de Nuits Villages is elegantly structured with poised, delicate tannins, bright acidity and well-defined fruit flavours.
