It was the great Jim Barry who had the foresight, to not only purchase the parcel of land from a Scottish cattle farmer, Duncan McRae Wood, but then to plant it initially with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, and finally during the drought of 1968/69 to plant a unique eight-acre alluvial slope with Shiraz which was the Armagh vineyard. These vines were left to mature gracefully, whilst at the same time, clearly producing some of the best fruit in the Clare Valley. Then, in 1985, when fresh back from a trip to Europe, Peter Barry persuaded his father that they needed to make a wine exclusively from these extraordinary Shiraz vines that would make the wine world sit up and take notice… and thus The Armagh was born.

Forty years on, The Armagh is still one of Australia’s most iconic wines. Following the retirement of Peter earlier this year, Jim Barry Wines is now fully in the hands of the third generation of Barry’s to take this outstanding estate into the future. Tom Barry has been making the wines since 2010 and his mark is clearly defined across all their wines – elegance, restraint but still plenty of power. The Armagh Shiraz 2022 is very much continuing in that style,“…finely tuned, silken palate… Excellent balance and purity with great freshness and a long life ahead”, according to James Suckling. The 2022 is a wine that is without doubt going to reward patience and will be exceptionally long lived.
