Domaine des Comtes Lafon, in Meursault, is one of Burgundy’s most sought-after producers. With holdings in each of the finest 1er Crus in Meursault, they have built up a reputation since their founding back in 1869 for chiselled, terroir-driven wines of the finest quality. The whites are world class from top to bottom, and their reds from Volnay and Monthelie should not be overlooked – the top red produced is the Volnay Santenots du Milieu. Jasper Morris noted in ‘Inside Burgundy’ that the domaine’s whites are “now consistently among the best in Burgundy, while since 1989 the reds have reached the top division.”
 
Winemaking varies each year due to the condition of the vintage, but as a general rule, Chardonnay grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented in wood – 25-40% new for the 1er Crus, but only for the first year, after which they are transferred into older wood for the second winter, before bottling. Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, and is vinified in stainless steel before being transferred to 30% new oak barrels for 18-24 months and bottled without fining following two rackings.
 
Domaine des Comtes Lafon has been certified organic since the mid-1990s and have employed biodynamic principles since 1998, but have not become certified due to all the red tape involved.
