Torre do Esporao 2017, Herdade do Esporao, Alentejo, 3x750ml
Founded in 1973 by José Roquette and Joaquim Bandeira, Esporão’s mission is to make the finest wines from what nature provides, in a responsible and inspiring way. Throughout the years they have learned that organic farming contributes to this – protecting soils, increasing the resilience and quality of the vineyards, allowing them to obtain healthier and more balanced grapes that require less intervention in the winery and produce wines with greater identity, sense of place and without products that are harmful to our health and the environment. Today, they are one of the leading wine companies in Portugal and one of the largest organic wine producers in the world. Playing a key role in the national and international promotion of Alentejo, but also present in the Douro and Vinho Verde regions, Esporão has become an ambassador of Portuguese culture, developing its activities in a sustainable manner, whilst building close relationships with clients and consumers all over the world.
Herdade do Esporão, where majority of Torre do Esporão’s grapes are produced, is located 170km from Lisbon, integrated in Alentejo DOC in Reguengos de Monsaraz sub-region. The wine is a blend of 40% Aragonez, 30% Touriga Franca, a little Touriga Nacionaland for the first time the 2017 contains around 25% of Alicante Bouschet.
Since 1985, this is just the fourth edition of Torre do Esporão, which has only been produced in 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2017. It owes its singular qualities to the generosity of the specific vintage and vineyards but also to the passionate work of a team who accompanied the vine and the wine along their long journey. The result is this elegant, sophisticated wine with a beautiful texture and aromatic complexity. A great, unforgettable wine, Torre is made when everything goes better than planned - the decision to bottle Torre is made in the winery, when they feel perfection has been attained.
2011 was a universally great vintage across Portugal and the wine has an incredible silkiness and depth of flavour, but the latest release, the 2017 is similar in style but with an extra layer of complexity from the addition of the Alicante Bousquet. The wine has an incredible richness combined with freshness and elegance and whilst it is hugely concentrated, it does not in any way seem overpowered, instead remaining elegant and beautifully aromatic. It is absolutely delicious now but clearly has a very long life ahead of it. A superb wine that i can highly recommend.
