Gevrey-Chambertin 2024, Jane Eyre, 6x750ml
Australian-born, Jane’s career has seen her move from hairdresser to artisanal winemaker. In 1998, she was working as a hairdresser when she asked a customer, who happened to be the wife of wine writer Jeremy Oliver, if she knew of any wineries where she could do work experience. The Olivers recommended Burgundy, which has since been an inextricable part of Jane's life. “I fell in love with France, and Burgundy is just what I wanted to make.” After working vintages at Cullen in Margaret River, and Felton Road and Ata Rangi in New Zealand, she came to Burgundy in 2004 for a job with Domaine des Comtes Lafon. She then took over as assistant winemaker at Domaine Newman, and has slowly developed her own négociant business, renting a small space in a winery in Bligny-lès-Beaune with Dominique Lafon. She is achieving impressive results with Pinot Noir using a minimal intervention approach to winemaking and allowing her wines to express a true sense of place.
In the 2021 edition of Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France, Jane Eyre was awarded two stars, one of only 26 producers in the whole of France to be recognised at this level. Otherwise known as the ‘Guide Vert’ or Green Guide to the best French wines, Jane is also the only Australian producer to receive two stars for their wines, a phenomenal achievement for a relative newcomer to Burgundy.
2024 was a tough vintage for many, but for Jane it could have hardly suited her better! A cold, rainy growing season resulting in low natural alcohol and very low yields, it required a lot of work in the cellar, but the results are excellent. Many producers struggled with ripeness in 2024, and their wines are light and lacking in flavour, but Jane Eyre’s 2024s have energy and purity, and whilst they are light and elegant, this is precisely Jane’s style, and what they lack in colour, they make up for in complexity of flavour, gorgeous purity and clarity of origin. Utterly delicious, these are more than worthy of your collection.
Neal Martin wrote on www.vinous.com: “I asked her for five sentences about the vintage. Her reply: “This is not exactly five sentences, but you’re talking to an ex-hairdresser. The insistent rain and cool weather resulted in low yields caused by a combination of poor fruit set and mildew. It felt like the fruit was never going to get ripe and the weather was never going to get better. When we picked, I really thought I was going to have a winery full of unripe fruit, but most of it had gotten over the line. Alcohol was low, in some cases very low, but tannins were ripe. I drastically reduced the percentage of whole bunch I had been using and only purchased one new barrel as I didn’t want the wines to get swamped by oak, especially if the cuvée consisted of two barrels. The aging process and transformation that happens after a year in barrel will never cease to amaze me. In hot years you put them to barrel praying they will somehow slim down, and in leaner years like 2024 and 2017, you hope they will put on some weight…and they do! I personally love the cool years for their transparency. You can see the year and the sites so much more clearly and you find wines of such delicate, ethereal perfume and elegance. They won’t all last for ever and ever, but does it really matter?”
