Situated at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountain between Paarl and Franschoek, Plaisir Estate was founded in 1695 by a Frenchman, Charles Marais, who had settled in the Cape a few years before. The vineyards for the Cabernet are all located on the Plaisir Estate on the south-eastern slopes of the Simonsberg, planted in weathered soils composed of decomposed granite, shaded by the high mountain peaks, so they benefit indirectly from the hot afternoon sun. this slows down the ripening, allowing gradual development on the vine, resulting in richly complex wines with lovely ripe tannins.

The wine is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, leafy on the nose, with notes of blackberry, red currants and graphite – wonderfully clean and fresh, and very typical in style. Flavours carry through to the palate where the wine is mouth filling but soft and silky in texture, and very moreish. The 14.5% alcohol is well hidden between layers of lush, vibrant red berry, black cherry and plum flavours, finishing with violets and a hint of mint and clove. This is delicious now and opens up beautifully over an hour or two in the glass, but should easily last another 4-5 years in the cellar, if well kept.
