Indisputably one of the Northern Rhone's First Growths, Hermitage La Chapelle from Paul Jaboulet-Aine is a truly iconic wine. Named after the chapel purchased by Jaboulet in 1919 that stands at the top of the Hermitage hill, the guardian of its south facing slope of schist, granite and gneiss, La Chapelle is created from a series of barrel tastings, with the very best wines selected for blending. Fruit from Le Meal and Bessards make up the majority, with Greffieux, Les Rocoules and sometimes Diognieres making up the balance. It is this wine that has built the reputation of Domaine Paul Jaboulet-Aine and it remains the flagship wine today despite its recent expansion by the Frey family (owners of Chateau La Lagune, and Champagne Billecart-Salmon, who purchased the domaine in 2016)
 
The granitic slopes of the western part of the appellation give the reds of Hermitage a unique structure and superb longevity - irrespective of the quality of the vintage, La Chapelle is always a very long-lived wine – Rhone expert Jeb Dunnuck calls it a “backward, primordial Hermitage built for the ages”, awarding it #2 Wine of the Year in 2020, and suggests it will drink well until 2078! In the best vintages, La Chapelle offers a wonderful silky elegance making it one of the unmissable icons that everyone should have at least a vintage of in their cellar!
