Kai 2010, Carmenere, Errazuriz, 6x750ml
‘KAI’, meaning ‘Plant’ in the old Chilean dialect is the Errazuriz estate’s flagship and most sophisticated Carmenere – it is regularly labelled as Chile’s finest Carmenere - and therefore the world’s - by many of the top critics, and whilst the 2020 is the latest release, I am delighted to offer the 2010, which is drinking wonderfully right now, and still improving in bottle.
KAI first achieved fame in 2010, during a blind tasting in New York, where the 2003 vintage secured 1st place, beating many famous wines such as Sassicaia, Haut Brion, Lafite-Rothschild and Opus One.
The grapes for KAI are sourced from the very best parcels of vines in Errazuriz’s Max V vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley, planted in 1992 and 1993 on deep alluvial, stony soils with excellent drainage. Combined with the cooling breezes from the nearby Pacific ocean, the Carmenere grapes see a long growing season, allowing for full ripeness, giving wonderful colour and texture and of course delicious flavour! Kai 2010 contains 96% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot, aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels.
