Viñedo Chadwick 2023 is a momentous release for the Chadwick family, as it marks an important 25-year milestone for this pioneering wine. Since its inception in 1999, its unprecedented rise to fame has included a number of groundbreaking achievements:

  • The first Chilean wine to break into the global elite. The historic 2004 Berlin Tasting shifted international perceptions when Viñedo Chadwick 2000 beat Latour, Lafite and Margaux 2000 in a blind tasting.
  • The first 100-point wine in Chile’s history. To date, four vintages have achieved this recognition from several leading critics.
  • ‘Wine Legend’ award by Decanter magazine, placing it alongside iconic names such as Petrus, Lafite, Margaux and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
  • Its D.O. of Puente Alto is now recognised as a world-class appellation for Cabernet Sauvignon, given its special terroir.

It is rare for an overseas newcomer to share this space alongside so many hallowed names in such a short space of time. The Chadwick family’s unwavering commitment to flagship-level quality is impossible to ignore —it is the foundation of a legacy in the making.

The 2023 vintage marks a new milestone and sets a new precedent. With warm days and cool nights throughout the growing season, the Cabernet Sauvignon had the ideal conditions to ripen to perfection while retaining its signature poise, vibrancy, and freshness.

Since 2022, the estate has further refined its élevage: 18 months in oak, with 90% in barrel and 10% in foudre.  This managed maturation preserves the purity of the fruit while adding structure and nuance. The result is pristine, expressive dark fruits layered with spice and mineral notes, supported by supple, finely textured chalky tannins — a clear expression of the distinguished DNA of the Puente Alto terroir.

Joaquin Hidalgo of Vinous celebrates this: “The most prominent is Alto Maipo, where the alluvial terraces of the river deliver a profile that Chilean winemakers know how to handle with great precision. (...) Those from the Puente Alto (…) are particularly remarkable, taking on an intensity that you won’t find anywhere else in the country. Notable wines (...) include (...) 2023 Viñedo Chadwick (...)”.

The exceptional trajectory of the 2023 vintage is clearly reflected in the praise it has received from leading critics:

This is one of the best vintages of Viñedo de Chadwick” 100 points, James Suckling

“It will surely become a 100-point wine at a not-distant point in its trajectory of development; such is the nuance and energy it shows from the outset - make sure you save a few bottles and revisit it in a handful of years.”99 points, Decanter

“This is a charming showing of Chadwick…, and my score could appear conservative with more time in bottle.” - 96+ points, Wine Advocate

This journey has been one of patience, vision and dedication, and I feel deeply rewarded to see our family legacy flourish with such grace and distinction.”

“As always, this is super refined, but with convincing cabernet sauvignon depth on the nose. Lightly ashy, with a medium to full body and lots of fine cigar box, tobacco, cassis, dark berries, cocoa powder and hints of cumin and fennel. Firm and rich, and the tannins are polished but chalky and reactive, with an incredibly long, juicy finish. This is the 25th vintage of Vinedo Chadwick, and it is definitely one of the best Cabernets from this hot vintage, but I don't feel any heat here. In fact, I can't even tell that this comes from a warm year. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. This shows transparency and purity of fruit compared with the more cedary 2021. This is one of the best vintages of Vinedo de Chadwick. There is lovely balance that makes it approachable now, but it will be better from 2027.”

“The 25th vintage of Viñedo Chadwick offsets the vintage's warm with ease, showing definition, freshness and seductiveness. Cranberries, wild strawberries and raspberries mingle on the nose, cloaked in wet tobacco and cherry leaves; rockrose hovers with fragrant allure. The nimble palate is carried by fine tannins, sprinkled with Himalayan salt and pink pepper. These frame the juicy redcurrant and pomegranate at the core, aided by a fine, exact acid line. Long, lively finish showing an intriguing, dynamic contrast between blood orange zest and broody coffee and Oolong. It will surely become a 100-point wine at a not-distant point in its trajectory of development, such is the nuance and energy it shows from the outset - make sure you save a few bottles and revisit it in a handful of years.”

“The 2023 Viñedo Chadwick is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot from Puente Alto. This vintage offers a slightly more restrained fruit profile, with notes of cherry, balsamic hints and a touch of cedar contributing complexity. With air, subtle tones of preserves and sour cherry begin to emerge. The palate is dry and linear, with fine tannins and a lean feel that reflects the character of the year. Integrated acidity lifts the finish, while the structure suggests this will gain in delicacy with time, even if it remains somewhat tightly wound today.”

“The 2023 Viñedo Chadwick includes 4% Petit Verdot and underwent an 18-month élevage in 90% barrique and 10% foudre. It is a more high-toned and beaming expression in this vintage, opening with dried herb, pipe tobacco, amaro and vanilla aromas, along with a bright, red-fruited and elegantly floral core. The palate displays Chadwick's textbook grace and finesse, combining a juicy and seamless profile of understated ripeness with mouthwatering acidity that carries through the refined, sturdy finish. Youthful, oak-derived aromas of vanilla and graphite emerge with further aeration, as does a touch of retronasal perfume that further enlivens the finish. Overall, this is a charming showing of Chadwick that is quite approachable in its youth, and my score could appear conservative with more time in bottle.”

“Viñedo Chadwick 2023 presents a vibrant purple-red hue with ruby highlights. On the nose, it reveals a complex array of layers, showcasing intense aromas of fresh red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, alongside delicate floral notes of wild rose. The palate harmoniously echoes these floral nuances, framed by soft, fresh red fruit flavours. This vintage features fine-grained tannins with a chalky texture, providing a firm and elegant structure throughout its journey on the palate, lingering beautifully with remarkable persistence.”
Emily Faulconer, Technical Director March 2025

Vintage 2023:

A beautifully warm, sunny season, balanced by cooler nights. Giving even ripening with for a wine with vibrant colour, fresh fruit aromas, and elegant tannins.
The winter rains replenished the vineyards with 221 millimetres, which was around 8% more that the decade’s average.  After several very dry seasons, this revitalisation of the soils was much needed in preparation for the new growing season.

Spring unfolded with soft warmth and bright, dry days, encouraging an even budbreak and healthy flowering. The vines rewarded this balance with beautifully uniform, high-quality clusters.
As summer approached, the warmth of late December brought a graceful slowing of growth, guiding the vines towards ripening. January was warmer than usual, yet the nights stayed deliciously cool — a contrast that deepened colour and lifted the grapes’ natural perfume and acidity. February and March continued the gentle heat, hastening an early harvest, around a week ahead of the norm. The picking window was narrower than usual, requiring careful attention to each parcel. Cabernet Sauvignon was gathered between the second and third weeks of March, with a select plot of Petit Verdot following on the 28th.

These conditions produced outstanding fruit with preserved acidity, flavour concentration and remarkable colour. They also delivered greater structure, texture, and richness. The 2023 vintage at Viñedo Chadwick was born of a warm season, yet it carries a wonderful freshness and elegance - a true reflection of the vineyard’s exceptional harmony and sanctuary.
