Chianti Classico Riserva 2017, Querciabella, 6x750ml
Querciabella is an estate that is truly dedicated to its terroir. With a number of vineyards scattered throughout the Chianti Classico region, they can easily blend the fruit of warm sites with that of cooler sites, in order to achieve the perfect balance every year. Winemaker Manfred Ing spent many years working alongside Luca Currado of legendary Barolo estate Vietti, before moving south to Tuscany, and his expertise is laudable.
The Chianti Classico Riserva is only made in the finest vintages from the very finest terroirs in Chianti. It is the result of an almost obsessive search for quality in Chianti, which resulted in the purchase of three of the finest sites in the region, one from each commune of Greve, Radda and Gaiole.
Whilst 2016 was widely regarded as one of the finest vintages in recent memory for the region, Antonio Galloni actually scored the 2017 one point higher! It’s not really surprising as the Querciabella Riserva is basically a Gran Selezione in all but name – they feel the restrictions are too lax, so although this is a Chianti based on a selection of the finest plots, it is bottled as a Riserva, but can easily outclass many of the finest wines in Tuscany.
