Henschke, Hill of Grace 2022, Eden Valley, 3x750ml
2022 is a triumphant vintage for Henschke and marks 70 years of their celebrated ‘Mount Edelstone’ Shiraz, one of Australia’s longest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines. Cyril Henschke first produced ‘Mount Edelstone’ as a single-vineyard wine from the 1952 vintage, with the 1956 vintage subsequently enjoying overnight success in wine shows and bringing national recognition to an already respected estate. The creation of 1952 Mount Edelstone was a pivotal moment in Australia’s fine wine story
The Henschke family have made wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868, with fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke taking over in 1979. Together with his viticulturist wife, Prue, they have built upon their inheritance, transforming this traditional producer into one that is celebrated worldwide.
Prue’s pioneering work in the vineyard cannot be underestimated. Over the past 50 years, she has worked tirelessly, vine by vine, to improve the health of the vineyards through meticulous soil management and reintroducing native plants to promote biodiversity. Applying organic and biodynamic practises has been critical in nurturing the health of Henschke’s vineyards.
The 2022 vintage reflects the Henschke family’s enduring commitment to preserving old vines and expressing these remarkable vineyards in the glass.

Over 180 years ago, Johann Christian Henschke settled in the Eden Valley where he built his farm. When third generation, Paul Alfred Henschke took over the reins in 1914, the now famed Hill of Grace vines were more than 50 years old. The original vines were planted around 1860 on rich alluvial soil in a shallow fertile valley just north-west of the winery. Sitting at 400 metres above sea level, the 4-hectare Hill of Grace vineyard lies opposite the beautiful Gnandenberg Lutheran Church from which it takes its name.‘Gnadenberg’ translates to ‘Hill of Grace’ in German.
Cyril Henschke created ‘Hill of Grace’ in 1958, from handpicked grapes vinified in traditional open top fermenters. The vineyards original ‘Ancestors’ vines are now approximately 160 years old and remain the heart of the ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard, alongside a small selection of ungrafted ‘Centenarians’ (vines over 100 years old), ‘Survivors’ (vines over 70 years old) and ‘Old Vines’ (over 35 years old). This is one of Australia’s most-celebrated wines.
The 2022 ‘Hill of Grace’ was made from 100% Shiraz from pre-phylloxera genetic material brought over from Europe in the mid-1800s. The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak hogsheads for 18 months.
