Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, 2015, 6x750ml
The 2015 Comtes de Champagne brings a lighter, more delicate expression than recent vintages, and Antonio Galloni's early tasting note captures it perfectly, calling the wine "delicate, airy and wonderfully expressive." It has all the hallmarks of an outstanding Comtes de Champagne, with a character that is very much its own.
Key Facts:
· Founded in 1734 by Jacques Fourneaux; acquired by Pierre Taittinger in 1931 after his WWI service in Champagne saw him stationed at the Chateau.
· Still independently family-owned, now led by Pierre’s great-grandchildren, Vitalie and Clovis Taittinger.
· Based in Reims, the House sits above UNESCO-listed 4th-century chalk cellars, originally belonging to Benedictine monks - ideal for slow Champagne ageing.
· Known for a Chardonnay-dominant style (40% in Brut Réserve to 100% in Comtes Blanc de Blancs), valued for elegance and finesse.
· Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs: Prestige cuvée, aged a minimum of 10 years prior to release, and made only in exceptional years.
“The 2015 Comtes de Champagne is delicate, airy and wonderfully expressive. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk, mint and slate are finely sculpted in the glass. Light on its feet and crystalline, the 2015 is terrific. There's a touch of savoriness that is typical of the year, but it is not dominant or overpowering. At present, the 2015 shows a bit of tightness from its recent disgorgement, but that should not be an issue in time. Comtes is a real success in a year that was quite challenging. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2025.”

Vintage 2015
And, as it turned out, a promising one. Favourable weather conditions led the CIVC to forecast an early start to the harvests, especially in the Aube and Sézanne regions. The particularly hot, dry summer resulted in some irregularity in the picking times in different areas. At Taittinger, the harvests began on 4 September in the vineyards in the Aube, a week before those in the Marne.
These involved 800 seasonal workers, spread over the Champagne producer's 288 hectares, with a yield of 11,800 kg/hectare (the compulsory yields being 10,500 kg/hectare for market yield and 12,400 kg/hectare for agronomic yield).
Everything already suggested that the vintage would be a «grand vin»: the vines were in excellent health and the grapes reached a very good level of ripeness (10.5% potential alcohol). Alternating periods of dryness and rain resulted in a beneficial water stress which was more pronounced in the Aube than in the Marne due to the composition of the subsoil. The impact was most noticeable in the Aube, where the bunches often consisted of small grapes, which were nevertheless very ripe. For cellar master Loïc Dupont, it was a beautiful harvest: the Chardonnay was fruity and expressive, with a golden colour. The Pinot Noir had a pleasant lightness with a base of red fruit aromas. The Pinot Meunier was ultimately more varied, despite a satisfactory level of ripeness.
"We are very pleased to have brought grapes of exceptional quality to the presses, this year, particularly as this was an atypical growing season. So what will the wines be like? No doubt they too will be exceptional"
Vincent Collard, Vineyard Director

The origins of Champagne Taittinger date back to 1734 when the original house was founded by Jacques Fourneaux. The Taittinger link was established in 1931 when Pierre Taittinger, the founder of today’s company acquired the House. Pierre spent time in the Champagne region when serving in the 1st world war as a young cavalry officer. Stationed at the Château de la Marquetterie, he fell in love with this remarkable property and its vineyards and eventually purchased the company. Today, the Reims based House is headed up by Pierre’s great grandchildren Vitalie and Clovis, both of whom are actively involved in the day to day running of this thriving family Champagne House.
Taittinger remains one of the few Champagne Houses to be owned and actively managed by the family named on the label. Taittinger’s home is situated above miles of chalk tunnels and cellars. These 4th century UNESCO World Heritage listed cellars once belonged to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of St Nicaise and are perfect for the slow ageing process required for great Champagne.
The hallmark of the Taittinger Champagnes is the high percentage of Chardonnay used in their winemaking which can be anything from 40% in the Brut Réserve Non Vintage to 100% in this wine, the prestigious Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs. This Chardonnay dominance provides for a style of elegance, delicacy and finesse which is recognised worldwide and has earned the House many accolades and awards over the years.
Cuvée Prestige is the finest Champagne that a house produces. Comtes de Champagne is the ultimate expression of Taittinger. Made only in exceptional years from the best Grand Cru fruit and in small quantities from the first pressings, it is ‘La crème de la crème’. Presented in 18th century antique style bottles, this hand-crafted Champagne is aged 18 metres underground in the UNESCO status Saint Nicaise cellars in Reims, for 10 years before being released.
