From vineyards planted in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape, only 7 barrels were produced of the 2010, and the vintage has never been previously released by the Klein Constantia estate.
 
Given how particular Klein Constantia are about whether or not to produce a vintage each year, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of winemaking history.

Crafted from a limited crop shaped by rigorous, unconventional farming techniques, this vintage followed a winemaking process previously untested at the estate. Harvested in three carefully timed batches, the first selection provided acidity, the second added mid-season ripeness, and the final batch, comprising individually picked raisins, contributed deep concentration and natural sweetness.
 
The 3 week harvest was followed by a groundbreaking step: for the first time, Muscat de Frontignan grapes were destemmed and fermented on the skins in open-top wooden fermenters for two weeks. This method gave the wine remarkable concentration, texture and phenolic depth. After pressing, the wine completed fermentation in 50% new 500L oak barrels, then was left to age on the fine lees for 15 years.
 
The 2010 Vin de Constance has an elegantly balanced palate that delivers a bold yet intense honeysuckle, sandalwood, nutmeg and raisined Muscat all finished with a concentrated and lively acidity that helps to balance out the residual sugar. All of this helps create a completely unique flavour profile unlike any other before. It is vastly complex with sweetness that is perfectly subdued by bright acidity, creating the perfect wine that can be enjoyed now or aged for the next generation.
