“The more Chilean wines I taste, the more I’m convinced that the coast is where readers will find some of the country’s most distinctive wines”
- Joaquin Hidalgo,Vinous
“…The latest set of Las Pizarras bottlings is outstanding...”
- Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate

Both wines achieved some of their highest scores to date in 2024 from Vinous; the Chardonnay has been awarded 97 points and is one of Chile’s first truly iconic wines. Its consistency stamping its identity alongside the global elite: “Layered and nuanced, it strikes a well-judged balance between oak, tension and a faintly creamy texture…This vintage suggests that Las Pizarras is finding a stylistic path where fruit and tension express the cool climate while measured aging delivers greater harmony”. The Pinot Noir is equally compelling, and in a slight tweak stylistically in 2024 it is crafted with 100% destemmed fruit. Its dreamy crystalline purity, vivid aromatics and effortless charm captivate in the glass: “rosehip, fresh roses, cherry and violets in layered detail…Pure, primary and precise, it is dry, with a silky texture, faint talc-like grip and a vibrant varietal finish.” - 96 points.
Key Facts:
- 11th vintage to be released | Alcohol: 12.5%| pH: 3.14 | Aged:12 months in 400-liter French oak barrels, 22% new (10% more than in 23)
- Harvest 14th February and 8th March. The fruit was pressed as 100% whole-cluster, and fermented in French oak barrels, staying in contact with its lees for six months. 50% of the blend underwent malolactic fermentation (up from 35% in 2023). This delivered more texture and breadth to the palate, whilst retaining the hallmark freshness and vibrancy of the wine that is unique to its location.
- Sourced from three individual coastal plots, each handpicked in small parcels with rigorous selection and vinified separately. Plot 39, the ‘mother block’ and the heart and soul of the blend, consistently delivers the best and most complex fruit. This plot is extremely influenced by the slate rock from which these wines take their name, producing its hallmark salinity. South facing and therefore cooler, the vineyard avoids direct afternoon sun, preserving freshness and precision.
- Direct from the winemaker – Tomas Muñoz: “Pale yellow with golden hues. A delicate, restrained nose reveals notes of white blossom such as orange flower, accompanied by hints of green apple and mandarin peel. Subtle layers of wafer pastry emerge, underpinned by notes reminiscent of ulmo honey and propolis. On the palate, the aromatic impressions are reinforced: a bright, citrusy entry gives way to flavours of wafer and floral notes. The attack is vertical and refreshing, immediately delivering a sensation of tension and crispness, beautifully complemented by a soft creaminess that adds texture. A complex, vibrant wine that achieves a fine balance between tension and texture.”
CRITIC SCORES
“The 2024 Chardonnay Las Pizarras from Quillota in Aconcagua Costa spent six months on its lees and 12 months in oak barrels. Fine and delicate, it opens with subtle floral notes, a hint of herbs, ginger, crisp apple and a trace of jasmine. On the palate, it is vibrant and dry, with marked acidity, a saline edge and a soft, talc-like texture. Layered and nuanced, it strikes a well-judged balance between oak, tension and a faintly creamy texture. This vintage suggests that Las Pizarras is finding a stylistic path where fruit and tension express the cool climate while measured aging delivers greater harmony.”

“Fine lees, oatmeal, lemons, yuzu and touches of minerals and cream on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with a fresh, round center palate and a long, zesty finish. Quite well balanced. Drinkable now, but can hold for a few years.”

Key Facts:
- 11th vintage to be released | Alcohol: 12.5% | pH: 3.46
- Clone 777 used for Pinot Noir (the 'Dijon' clone originating from Burgundy). It suits the terroir, showing the power and beauty perfectly.
- Harvested between 13th February and 4th March. Fermentation took place in small open-top stainless steel tanks, with 85% of the fruit undergoing cold maceration at 8–10°C for 2–3 days prior to fermentation. Total maceration lasted 8–12 days. The wine was then aged for 12 months in 400-l French oak barrels (50% new, 50% used; 15% second fill, 35% third and fourth fill), with slightly less new oak used in 2024.
- No whole bunch in 2024, 100% de-steamed, delivering crystalline fruit and immense elegance.
- The heart of the blend comes from the ‘mother block’ 32, which holds the perfect location. Slate lies just a few centimetres beneath the surface. This is the coolest sector of the vineyard. Sourced from three individual plots, the fruit is handpicked in small parcels, double selection and vinified separately.
- Direct from the winemaker- Tomas Muñoz: “Medium cherry-red in colour with violet highlights. A delicate, pure nose reveals floral aromas reminiscent of wild rose, alongside red fruits such as cherries and redcurrants. Subtle spice notes of nutmeg join nuances of truffle and cinnamon. On the palate, the floral character is confirmed on the entry, giving way to red fruit — especially cherry — interwoven with sweet spices. This is a fresh, delicate yet characterful wine. Its juicy acidity brings tension and verticality, while fine, chalky-textured tannins provide structure and depth, extending its persistent and expressive finish.”

“The 2024 Pinot Noir Las Pizarras from Quillota in Aconcagua Costa was aged 12 months in 400-liter French oak barrels, 50% new, 15% second-use, and 35% third- and fourth-use. Winemaking has evolved from open fermentations with stems to a slower, cooler, fully destemmed approach. The wine offers aromas of rosehip, fresh roses, cherry and violets in layered detail. Oak plays only a minor role. Pure, primary and precise, it is dry, with a silky texture, faint talc-like grip and a vibrant varietal finish.”

Vintage 2024: The 2024 season was excellent, but a slightly smaller vintage than normal. Winter 2023 brought 378 mm of rainfall—around 43% above the yearly average of 265 mm. It allowed the vines roots to reach deeply into the mineral rich soils giving the perfect start. The metamorphic rock which Las Pizarras sits atop is like limestone - great at absorbing water. A cool Spring, encouraged gradual growth, producing healthy hydrated and vigorous vines. The weather was warm but cloudy from October to December and this delayed flowering by 10 to 12 days, resulting in a lighter fruit set and reduced yields. With yields down, this naturally gave concentration to the fruit, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality and enhanced the aromatics, while balanced canopy growth ensured even ripening and moderate alcohol levels. The high Magnesium content of the soils, which is like calcium, helped deliver the salinity and citrus acidity. By late December through to March, temperatures rose and ripening accelerated, allowing the fruit to ripen under textbook conditions. Harvest began around 10th January for both varietals, which was normal for the Chardonnay, and a week early for the Pinot Noir.
Location and Vineyards: Sourced from exceptional sites within Errázuriz’s Aconcagua Costa vineyards in Quillota, these small, prized “Grand Cru” plots are defined by schist-rich soils and distinctive laminar metamorphic rock (see picture below), identified by renowned geologist Françoise Vannier, known for her work in Burgundy. Among the most complex soils in the region, these vineyards lie just 12 km from the Pacific Ocean, where rolling hills and cooling coastal breezes create ideal growing conditions. The result is a viticulturist’s haven, producing world-class, terroir-driven wines with precision, intensity, and elegance.
