2022 is a triumphant vintage for Henschke and marks 70 years of their celebrated ‘Mount Edelstone’ Shiraz, one of Australia’s longest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines. Cyril Henschke first produced ‘Mount Edelstone’ as a single-vineyard wine from the 1952 vintage, with the 1956 vintage subsequently enjoying overnight success in wine shows and bringing national recognition to an already respected estate.  The creation of 1952 Mount Edelstone was a pivotal moment in Australia’s fine wine story

The Henschke family have made wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868, with fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke taking over in 1979. Together with his viticulturist wife, Prue, they have built upon their inheritance, transforming this traditional producer into one that is celebrated worldwide.

Prue’s pioneering work in the vineyard cannot be underestimated. Over the past 50 years, she has worked tirelessly, vine by vine, to improve the health of the vineyards through meticulous soil management and reintroducing native plants to promote biodiversity. Applying organic and biodynamic practises has been critical in nurturing the health of Henschke’s vineyards.

The 2022 vintage reflects the Henschke family’s enduring commitment to preserving old vines and expressing these remarkable vineyards in the glass.

The winter of 2021 brought good rainfall, refilling soil profiles, and the cool, slow start to the growing season resulted in budburst occurring two weeks later than average. An extreme hail event on 28 October decimated the young shoot growth across our vineyards in Keyneton, significantly reducing crop potential. Late flowering (late November to early December) avoided the cold and windy conditions, resulting in good fruit set, albeit with smaller yields. A burst of summer heat, without extremes, supported berry development and balanced canopy growth. Welcome rain in late January occurred just before veraison and ripening, leading into a mild and dry finish to summer.

The 2022 vintage was late, with harvest dates one to two weeks later than the historical average. The resulting wines speak faithfully of their place, with elegance, distinction and enduring beauty. Reminiscent of the high-quality vintages of 1991, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2015, the 2022 single vineyard wines show wonderful ageing potential and will reward long-term cellaring under ideal conditions

Keyneton Euphonium references the Barossa village of Keyneton (home to the Henschke winery) and the Henschke Family Brass Band. The band was founded by second generation Paul Gottard Henschke in 1888 and was later led by third generation Paul Alfred Henschke, featuring instruments such as the B flat euphonium, cornet and E flat clarinet. The German euphonium has been restored and remains a Henschke family heirloom.

The 2022 ‘Keyneton Euphonium’ consists of 59% Shiraz, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. The wine was aged for 20 months in a mixture of new (20%) and seasoned (80%) French and American oak hogsheads.

‘The Wheelwright’ pays homage to founder Johann Christian Henschke, who was among the first generation of settlers in the Barossa Valley to establish a winery in 1868. Arriving from German Silesia as a skilled stonemason and wheelwright, he planted his first vineyards in the picturesque Eden Valley. This wine is produced from four blocks of old vine Shiraz from the eponymous 3.7 hectare single vineyard planted in 1968 by Cyril Henschke at 470 metres above sea level. The 2015 ‘Wheelwright’ was the first iteration released in 2020.

The 2022 ‘The Wheelwright’ was aged in French 100% seasoned hogsheads for 20 months.

First produced as a single vineyard in 1978, ‘Cyril’ pays tribute to fourth generation winemaker Cyril Henschke (1924-1979), one of Australia’s most revered winemakers, well known for his old vine and single vineyard wines. Cyril planted Cabernet Sauvignon along with Cabernet Franc and Merlot in 1969 on a north facing slope perched at 450 metres above sea level. Since the early 1990s, the wine has been produced from 1988 vines (3.2 hectares) planted by Prue and Stephen.

The 2022 ‘Cyril’ consists of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 20 months in French oak hogsheads (95% seasoned and 5% new).

Unusual for its time, the ‘Mount Edelstone’ Vineyard (16 hectares) was planted with Shiraz in 1912. From the German ‘Edelstein’ meaning ‘gemstone’, this wine references the small yellow opals once found in the area. The 500-million-year-old geology in the vineyard has created soils that are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the dry-grown, ungrafted centenarian vines. Cyril Henschke first bottled ‘Mount Edelstone’ as a single vineyard wine in 1952. By the time Cyril acquired the vineyard in 1974, ‘Mount Edelstone’ was already known as one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz wines. Produced for 70 years by the Henschke family, ‘Mount Edelstone’ is one of the longest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines in Australia.

The 2022 ‘Mount Edelstone’ was made entirely from 110-year-old Shiraz vines and aged for 20 months in French oak hogsheads (92% seasoned, 8% new).

Over 180 years ago, Johann Christian Henschke settled in the Eden Valley where he built his farm. When third generation, Paul Alfred Henschke took over the reins in 1914, the now famed Hill of Grace vines were more than 50 years old. The original vines were planted around 1860 on rich alluvial soil in a shallow fertile valley just north-west of the winery. Sitting at 400 metres above sea level, the 4-hectare Hill of Grace vineyard lies opposite the beautiful Gnandenberg Lutheran Church from which it takes its name.‘Gnadenberg’ translates to ‘Hill of Grace’ in German.

Cyril Henschke created ‘Hill of Grace’ in 1958, from handpicked grapes vinified in traditional open top fermenters. The vineyards original ‘Ancestors’ vines are now approximately 160 years old and remain the heart of the ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard, alongside a small selection of ungrafted ‘Centenarians’ (vines over 100 years old), ‘Survivors’ (vines over 70 years old) and ‘Old Vines’ (over 35 years old). This is one of Australia’s most-celebrated wines.

The 2022 ‘Hill of Grace’ was made from 100% Shiraz from pre-phylloxera genetic material brought over from Europe in the mid-1800s. The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak hogsheads for 18 months.
